In recognition of National Work Zone Awareness Week, AGC’s Work Zone Safety Committee is encouraging ALL AGC members and the public to put away distractions and slow down when driving through work zones.
Please join us on Tuesday, April 12th at 10:00 AM as we kick off “National Work Zone Awareness Week” with a press conference to make a plea to drivers to slow down and put away distractions when entering a highway work zone.
This year’s activities will include the dedication of Seabury Creek Bridge on SR158 to Marshall J. Walton.
Marshall, son of Johnny & Kathy Walton was killed in a highway Work zone when struck by a vehicle on February 13, 2015.
In 2018 Johnny and Kathy allowed us to feature Marshall’s photo on our NWZAW billboards located in several cities throughout Alabama. It is our hope that by continuing to showcase the message “DISTRACTED DRIVING CAN CHANGE LIVES FOREVER” that someone else’s child or loved one will be saved.
Because of the disturbing trend in the number of work zone accidents in Alabama, Senator Gerald Allen led the charge for a change in the state law for fines for all traffic violations in work zones in an effort to make our roadways safer. Since that change to the construction zone law was made last year, we have seen a small decline in work zone crashes and fatalities and we hope to see that downward trend continue.
There will be several coordinated events and press conferences
during National Work Zone Awareness Week throughout the state.
Wednesday, April 13th is “Wear Orange Day” honoring those who
have lost their lives in Work Zones. We are asking all members to have their employees wear their safety vests or t-shirts to work on Wednesday and that you make a group photo and send it to our office: staff@agcmobile.org
Tool Box Talks –
We are encouraging all members to host a Safety Stand Down, Tool Box Talk, or Safety Meeting anytime during the week to make their employees aware of the importance of driving safely and undistracted through work zones.
Daily Tool Box talks are available on our website courtesy of

Driving through Work Zones is NOT a GAME!
Did you know that Answering a text takes the driver’s attention for about 5 seconds—
which at 55 mph is like driving the length of a football field
WITH YOUR EYES CLOSED.
Don’t Be A Statistic – Drive Undistracted!
Distracted Drivers KILL!
We are excited to have the final version of the Work Zone Safety PSA that Ethan Crowe with the
University of Alabama/SafeState created for us. He did a fantastic job. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M106naFEMco&t=7s
We were so blessed to have members who were willing to participate in creating this PSA by providing signs, equipment, and acting. We could not have put it together without everyone helping.
Please help us get our message out to as many people as possible about the dangers of driving through work zones.
Whether you are driving through a work zone or working in one,
REMEMBER “WORK ZONE SAFETY IS EVERYBODY’S RESPONSIBILITY”.
